Our verdict

Get Cafelat Robot if: you want true zero-electricity (works during power outages, traveling, off-grid), you value simplicity, you're patient with manual workflow, you want lower price point. James Hoffmann praised its build and shot quality.

Get Flair 58 if: you want temperature consistency (electric preheat eliminates first-shot variance), you like having a pressure gauge for profiling practice, you're willing to deal with more setup time. Hoffmann: "frustratingly close to outstanding."

Both are excellent. Robot edge: simplicity, portability, lower price. Flair 58 edge: temperature consistency, prosumer build feel, integrated pressure gauge.

FAQ

Can I make milk drinks on either?

No — neither has a steam wand. Need a separate frother (Subminimal Nanofoamer ~$60, Bellman steamer ~$100). Total apartment latte setup = $460-560.

Which has the steeper learning curve?

Both similar — 2-3 weeks to get consistent shots. Robot is slightly more forgiving because the lever ratio is more intuitive. Flair 58 has a steeper pressure profiling learning curve but pays off in shot consistency.

What about Cafelat Robot Classic vs Barista version?

Barista version (which we reviewed) includes the professional 58mm basket. Classic version comes with a smaller pressurized basket — for serious users, get Barista. The $30 price difference is worth it.

Will Flair 58 work without electricity if needed?

Yes — preheat is optional, not required. Without preheat, you boil water externally and pull shots manually. Same as Robot but with worse temperature consistency on first shot.
